The most common reason for tooth extraction is removing seriously damaged teeth due to tooth decay, a fractured or broken tooth. It may also be necessary to reduce dental crowding, the risk of infection and in the case of preparing for a denture.

Although leaving a missing tooth gap is an option it is not recommended. It can cause shrinkage to bone and dental structures affecting healthy bite function and appearance. Some patients opt for a combination of dentistry and cosmetic dentistry treatments once teeth are removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why would the dentist recommend a tooth extraction?

There are a number of reasons why the dentist may recommend having a tooth removed:

    – Tooth infection or severe decay
    – Periodontal (gum) disease
    – Irreparable damage from trauma
    – Impaction (in the case of wisdom teeth)
    – To make space for tooth realignment with an orthodontic appliance
    – To allow dentures or implants to be fitted

  • What is the recovery process like?

Most people make a good recovery and return to normal activities very soon after having teeth removed. You should be able to go home the same day of your operation. Depending on the difficulty of the operation and the likelihood of infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics.

You should avoid any strenuous activities for the first 48 hours to reduce the risk of bleeding, swelling and bruising. You may need to take up to a week off work.

  • Can I drive home after having a tooth extraction?

If you have had anesthesia or sedation, the effects can last for some hours afterwards. You shouldn’t drive home but should arrange for someone to take you.
