What is HIFU (High Intensity Focus Ultrasound)?
HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a system developed originally for treatment of prostate cancer. Scientist realised that during treatment the patients experience noticeable tightening and firming of the area. Since, HIFU is now widely used in Aesthetics. It uses sound waves to vibrate lower levels of the skin and tissue heating the area. This heat induces collagen repair, physically tightens and lifts the skin leaving the skin radiant and firm.
Aesthetic Treatment with HIFU
HIFU is rapidly becoming the most popular treatment for non-surgical face-lifts. Treatment with HIFU is safe, effective, has no downtime and can instantly transform aged and tired skin. One session with HIFU takes around 45-60 minutes which allows the therapist to conduct treatment on the full face and neck areas. In total, 3 to 4 sessions of HIFU are required for results which can last between to 6 to 18 months.
How does HIFU work?
HIFU (High Intensity Focus Ultrasound) focuses sound waves to a single point, inducing high energy friction and heating. Using this, HIFU allows us to target specific depths under the skin, such as:
• 0.4 to 1.5mm : The Dermis, the primary layer of the skin which contains Collagen and Ellastin fibres. Using HIFU we can heat the tissue inducing blood flow, in turn helping with collagen and ellastin repair.
• 1.5mm to 3.0mm : The Subcutaneous (Hypodermis), the layer of the skin which contains fatty tissue. HIFU can be used to heat the fat cells, causing Adipolysis , the processes of naturally breaking down triglycerides.
• 3.0mm to 4.5 mm : SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System), the layer of tissue which sits between the Subcutaneous and Muscle fibre. Using HIFU to target the SMAS allows us to Strengthen, Tighten and Lift.

How many sessions of HIFU are needed?
At NL Clinic we recommend 3 to 4 treatments of HIFU spaces 1-2 weeks apart. Even after one session you can see visible results, however after 3 to 4 sessions you can see long lasting results up to 6 to 18 months.

Does treatment with HIFU hurt?
HIFU can be an uncomfortable treatment. The high energy focused sound waves can heat the skin up to 65-70 degrees Celsius. Before treatment, our Therapist will conduct a patch test to determine the pain threshold of the patient. You should expect the treatment to be uncomfortable but not hurt.

Is there any downtime from HIFU?
No, HIFU has no visible side effects. You will experience firming of the skin which may feel tight to touch.
